Tiia Vesalainen, a graduate student in UAH’s atmospheric science program, received the award for the best research poster in her session on Aug. 10 at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education’s (ORISE) Research Participant Poster Session.

As an ORISE summer intern, Vesalainen continued research she did for her UAH undergraduate capstone project with Dr. Udaysankar Nair. Working with Dr. Valentine Anantharaj at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, she used a different model and higher resolution to study the effects of complex terrain on storm development.

Vesalainen is in her first semester in the atmospheric science graduate program. She earned a B.S. with a double major in Earth system science (atmospheric science concentration) and mathematics at UAH.
